Dr. Mark J. Spoonamore, M.D. is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Spoonamore received his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, after completing his undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Dr. Spoonamore completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, one of the nation’s top-rated orthopaedic training programs. He completed a fellowship in Spinal Surgery at the University of Southern California Medical Center and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
After completing his spine fellowship training, Dr. Spoonamore served as Chief of Spine Surgery at the University of California-Irvine Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California-Irvine for two years.
Dr. Spoonamore was subsequently recruited by and returned to the University of Southern California, and was appointed as the Medical Director of the USC Spine Center.
Dr. Spoonamore continues to specialize in minimally invasive spine surgery and complex revision spine surgery, including spine tumors, spine trauma, and spinal deformity (scoliosis/kyphosis) surgery. Dr. Spoonamore also has a significant interest in pediatric spinal disorders. He was involved in numerous scoliosis research projects while at the University of Iowa, one of which received the prestigious Russell Hibbs Award at the 1998 Scoliosis Research Society meeting. Other research interests include spinal cord injuries and bone biology. He is a member of the North American Spine Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and is a reviewer for Spine (journal).
He maintains a specialized practice for adult and pediatric spinal disorders and is available for patient consultation at the USC Spine Center in Los Angeles, California. Requests for hospitalized patients to be transferred to Dr. Spoonamore and the Keck USC Hospital can also be made by contacting the Center.
Dr. Spoonamore also serves as Chief of the Spine Surgery Service at the Los Angeles County Hospital (LAC+USC Medical Center/General Hospital), providing surgical and non-surgical treatment to admitted patients with spinal disorders.
Dr. Spoonamore’s academic and clinical offices are located at the USC Spine Center, adjacent to Keck USC Hospital in Los Angeles, California.
